Royal Copenhagen Series for 2009
Christmas Plate Series by Sven Vestergaard
The 2009 Christmas plate, "Christmas at Amagertorv", shows one of the best preserved and oldest houses in inner Copenhagen. The location is Amagertorv (Amager Square), and it is in this beautiful setting that Royal Copenhagen has run its shop since 1884. The prominent building in Amagertorv was erected in 1616 for Mathias Hansen, who was the mayor of Copenhagen. As many other such buildings from that period, the building was originally built as a residence, with business owners in the side and rear buildings. In 1884 The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory moved its shop from Købmagergade to Amagertorv, and in 1911 the shop moved to # 6 Amagertorv, with art displayed on the ground floor and the shop in the basement. In the 1940s the factory took over the whole building, and the shop began to take the shape we know so well today.
On this year’s plate, in front of the beautiful snow-clad building one sees busy Christmas shoppers, with large packages in hand, trying to wind up their Christmas shopping. Also visible is the decorative Stork fountain, which has been part of the beautiful setting at Amagertorv since 1894 and has made the square a favorite spot for Copenhageners and tourists alike.
Royal Copenhagen’s Christmas Plate Series includes several products with this year’s motif: the bell, cup and saucer, drop, and pocket mirror. This year’s plaquette shows The Royal Exchange in Copenhagen.
This year’s figurines are two children, Sarah and Lucas, who are happily showing their Christmas gifts. Lucas has received a pair of fine white skates, and Sarah stands with her new brown teddy in her arm, while the last package has yet to be unwrapped. The figurine ornament for this year is two storks.
Children's Christmas Series by Henny Iversen
Royal Copenhagen’s annual "Children’s Christmas" series has been produced since 1998. Last year saw the addition of a new artist: Henny Iversen. The 2009 motif is called “Blessed with Angels”. The plate shows three small angels sitting on heaven’s soft white clouds.Annual Santa by Sven Vestergaard
The Annual Santa is a series from Royal Copenhagen in which we follow Santa on his rounds on a busy Christmas night. Year 2009 brings us the ninth figurine in the series, where Santa puts on a puppet show for his friend the dog.Annual Mug by Anna Sørensen
The series of Annual Mugs from Royal Copenhagen is a classic and this year’s motif is the 43rd in the series of usable mugs decorated by well-known Danish artists. Artist Anna Sørensen has created the motif using all the colours of the rainbow. The expression is organic but restrained
