Blue Fluted Full Lace

Blue Fluted Full Lace displays the utmost variation in ornamentation and craftsmanship. The lace-like weave of the borders is so intricate that only a very highly skilled craftsman can accomplish them in all their complexity. Arnold Krog designed the current version, elaborating on the original from 1775.

The epitome of Danish porcelain.

The Blue Fluted pattern is part of Denmark's cultural heritage. To connoisseurs all over the world it is synonymous with Danish porcelain. Blue Fluted is Royal Copenhagen's very first porcelain dinner service and is to Danish underglaze-decorated porcelain what the costly Flora Danica is to Danish overglaze-decorated porcelain: a measure of the skill, tradition and craftsmanship at Royal Copenhagen.

The No. 1 pattern.

The delicate and versatile pattern was adopted by the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory in 1775 when it was founded. The young enterprise tried its hand at this decoration first, and the identification number printed on the bottom of each piece is therefore No. 1. It became popular immediately, has never gone out of fashion, and has been the most sought-after of the Royal Copenhagen dinner services ever since.

Deceptively simple and easy to paint.

Far from it. On the contrary it takes 1,197 brush strokes to paint a Blue Fluted dinner plate, half of which are small dots. Although the pattern originated from China and has been used in a multiplicity of variations by porcelain factories all over the world, the Danish Blue Fluted has gained its world fame as the true Blue Fluted. This is due to the fact that in Denmark is the pattern still painted by hand by specially trained craftspeople; a tradition still carried on today by a new generation of porcelain painters - even though it takes 1,197 brush strokes to paint a Blue Fluted dinner plate.

Vigour and timeless qualities.

The pattern is admired for its vigour and timeless qualities and is believed to illustrate a chrysanthemum, which, through abstractions and simplifications, was transformed into its present form long before the pattern reached Europe. When Europe reinvented the old Chinese secret of making porcelain in the early 1700s, many European princes took pride in establishing their own porcelain factories, and this old Chinese pattern migrated from one factory to another. When the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory was established in 1775, its founder, Frantz Henrich Mller, adopted it too.

A three-leaf chrysanthemum.

The basic pattern is varied in accordance with the item and the basic design. Blue Fluted has three different designs: Plain with a simple, smooth edge, Half Lace with a painted lace edge and Full Lace with a perforated lace edge. The Blue Fluted service is virtually indistinguishable from the original fluted plates of more than 200 years ago. However, additional pieces in the style of the originals were designed from 1885 onwards, when the architect Professor Arnold Krog (1856-1931) was Artistic Head of Royal Copenhagen.

About Royal Copenhagen -- Royal Copenhagen, officially the Royal Porcelain Factory (in Danish: Den kongelige Porcelaansfabrik), was founded in Copenhagen in 1775 under the protection of Queen Juliane Marie and has been recognized ever since by its factory mark, the three wavy lines above each other, which symbolises Denmark’s three straits: Oresund, Store Baalt and Lille Baalt.
