Oiva Toikka 1931-2019
Beloved artist, designer, and professor Oiva Toikka has passed away in the morning on Monday April 22, 2019. Oiva Toikka was known for his imaginative, rich and bold glass art that is appreciated around the world.
Oiva Toikka started to work for Arabia in the 1950s and in 1963 he started as an in-house designer at Nuutajärvi glass factory. During his prolific career, he designed many popular series of glassware, including Kastehelmi (Dewdrop), Pioni and Flora. The world-famous Iittala’s Birds by Toikka collection has acquired an extensive and loyal fan base around the world, and through more than four decades, over 500 handcrafted species were born from the artist’s unique imagination. Toikka was also known for his numerous unique works, and his work is included in the collections of many prestigious museums around the world.
Oiva Toikka worked until the very last of his days. He was an artist who knew the possibilities of glass inside and out and worked with very close collaboration with glass blowers. Oiva Toikka was known as a master of glass and a great person whose sense of humor and warm personality touched many.
He will be deeply missed by all of us.
Toikka Glass Birds / These birds are really small miracles, expressing mankind's stubborn joy in an artistic expression that will always find a way, and a material. For over 50 years, Oiva Toikka has created this wonderful collection of handmade mouth-blown glass birds. His apparently limitless imagination, combined with a sophisticated knowledge of glass, has made it possible for him and his glass-blowers to create small miracles of life, collected and loved globally. Toikka's Birds are individually mouth-blown and handmade in Finland by world renowned master glass-blowers and craftsmen, which makes each bird a unique and inspired work of art.
