The lake once served as part of Copenhagen's defense and water supply. Nowadays, it is just a beautiful setting and when it freezes over, it is perfect for ice-skating. The Lake Pavilion sits in the background - built for the capital's Skating Association in 1894. The motif of this year's Royal Copenhagen Plate (109th in the series) also appears on the cup, the bell, and the drop. Allan Therkelsen, who designed the plate has also sculpted the accompanying figure, who of course, is the little girl from the motif.
