The History of Pepparkakor
Gingerbread first came to Sweden in the 14th century brought by German immigrants. Early references from the Vadstena Abby show that the Swedish nuns baked gingerbread to ease indigestion. initially, pepper was used as one of the main ingredients in the dough, but also ingredients such as anise, cedar oil, cinnamon, cardamom, and orange peel were used. Gradually the medical aspects faded away and the tasty little cookies became a luxury for royalty, eaten mostly during festivities and holidays. In Sweden, according to the myth, eating gingerbread makes you kind. How the myth arose is unclear however we support cookies that encourage kindness, and therefore like to believe that it is true!
