Tapio Wirkkala
Born in Hanko, Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a multi-talented and ingenious designer. Wirkkala's design work ranged from glass design and sculpture to banknote design and graphics. He is considered one of the leading figures in the Finnish modern art industry. During his active career, Tapio Wirkkala participated in international exhibitions and served as the artistic director of the University of Art and Design Helsinki for several years. He was awarded numerous awards, including three gold medals at the Milan International Triennial in both 1951 and 1954. The glass objects designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala are his best-known production. The glass series Ultima Thule and Tapio have maintained their popularity for decades.
