Malene Bjelke is a Danish sculptor whose work with stoneware and figures stems from extensive experience in the theatre. She graduated from the Danish School of Design in 1993 and, in addition to her work as a sculptor, she has worked with theatre and costumes for more than 20 years.
Malene Bjelke works extensively with human life and state of mind, expressed through the body. In the interaction between the figure and its surroundings, she seeks to uncover the inner landscape of human beings, where we recognize ourselves.
Since 2008, Malene Bjelke has worked from her own studio at Kronborg Castle, creating simple yet expressive figures depicting human archetypes of all ages. Her sculptures therefore often model different human characters, mindsets and thoughts, and the interaction between a figure and the surrounding space is an essential theme in her work.
With the Character series, Malene Bjelke proudly celebrates and interprets Kähler’s artistic legacy, which is kept alive by repeatedly introducing bold and artistic elements that are inspired by the past and designed for the present. While working on the characters for Kähler, she looked at human life and while modeling, she focused on the small authentic biases that help create dynamics and mysteriously uncover the beauty and diversity of the characters.

The story of Kähler begins as early as 1839, when the Dutch potter Herman J. Kähler opens a small ceramics workshop in Næstved and turns the first Kähler vase. It marks the start of a unique design adventure that will one day resonate around the world. However, it is only when his son Herman A. Kähler takes over the famous workshop in 1875 that the ceramic adventure really begins.
Craftsmanship, creativity and artistic collaborations have been part of Kähler's DNA since the beginning. And they still are. It's what has made Kähler an iconic ceramic brand, one which has charted the course of Danish ceramic design.
We create all our products based on Kähler's handmade design traditions. We've always done that—and we always will.
