As an extension to the RF1903 Sideways Sofa, the RF1904 Sideways Lounge Chair exhibits a soft design language and subtle details. This curvaceous chair continues to demonstrate designer Rikke Frost's mindful, minimal approach to contemporary furniture by designing for modern needs and using long-lasting materials.
The RF1094 Sideways Lounge Chair exudes modern elegance, inviting a sense of retreat with its cocooning shape. First impressions suggest an organic and sculptural seat which embraces the sitter with a firm, curved support wrapping around the sides and back. Closer inspection reveals a chair that reserves space for quiet contemplation whilst feeling open to welcome conversation.
Crafted from a considered trinity of classic materials, the chair displays a steam-bent backrest made from FSC™-certified oak or walnut and high-quality textile upholstery. Tightly strung paper cord detailing to the back of the chair gives it a lightness of form, making it beautiful to view from all angles.
With a neat, modern aesthetic and high-quality materials, the RF1904 Sideways Lounge Chair is a versatile choice for both residential and public settings.
Rikke Frost's interest in crafts and materials dates back to her childhood in the small Danish town of Bov. Her curiosity later led her to The Aarhus School of Architecture, where she trained as an industrial designer. Although her direction of study pointed towards industry, Rikke Frost chose to focus on furniture design and has since designed furniture for several renowned Danish and international companies. However, industrial design has influenced her design process, with production options always forming part of her initial consideration. She chooses materials, shapes and craft methods that can be incorporated in the best possible way into modern production—like at Carl Hansen & Son's furniture factory on Funen, Denmark, where old craft traditions such as wickerwork with woven paper cord and a high-tech production go hand in hand.
After several years in London, where Rikke Frost worked as a designer and buyer at Heal & Son, she returned to Denmark in 2004 to set up her own design studio, Rikke Frost Design. Later, she also began teaching at The Aarhus School of Architecture.
In 2019, Rikke Frost took part in the TV program 'Denmark's Next Classic', a competition in which she and four other Danish designers had to produce six different furniture pieces in a short time to create Denmark's next design classic. It was as part of this TV program that Rikke Frost created the Sideways Sofa in just three short weeks and her design went on to win in its category.
Rikke Frost has won and been nominated for several awards, including the Danish Design Award and Bolig Magasinets Design Award. She has also taken part in several exhibitions, including the Women in Danish Furniture Design exhibition at Trapholt Museum of Modern Art in Kolding, Denmark.
Carl Hansen & Søn's products embody the narrative of the finest classical furniture art, created by some of Denmark's leading architects and designers—including Frits Henningsen, Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch, Poul Kjærholm and Ole Wanscher—as well as the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and the Austrian design trio EOOS.
With solid foundations in Danish traditions of joinery, blended with deep insight into the latest production technology, we make furniture of durable beauty and value, distinguished by full respect for sustainable materials.
