In our archives, we collect samples of thousands of designs that have been tested at Kasthall over the years. In 2015, designer Maja Johansson Starander found and reinterpreted a pattern saved there since the 1960s. The result was Muse, a modern retro-classic woven in 100% wool.
Maja Johansson Starander is educated at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art in London. When completing her master's degree, Maja contacted Kasthall's then lead designer, Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg. They built instant chemistry and shared the same design philosophy. Thus, she decided to leave the design capital of London, moved to the small town of Kinna, and began working as an in-house designer at Kasthall in 2013.
Since 1889, the Kasthall Design Studio in Kinna, West Sweden, has created rugs for all kinds of clients and spaces; from beautiful residences, lux yachts, and exotic hideaways to cool offices, boutique hotels and the Swedish Royal Castle.
In an increasingly standardized world in which products are mass produced, painstaking handwork is more and more rare. However, this is what Kasthall represents: time for reflection, a longer perspective. Kasthall have been producing exceptional rugs, carpets and runners for over 130 years. They are united by a passion for the task: to create a rug that is unique, durable and irreplaceable.
Kasthall is about transforming a vision into a realistic design solution for the floor. To create a Kasthall rug, there are several ingredients; high expertise and craftsmanship, the finest natural materials in the world, and exceptional design understanding.
