Zidane – A 21st Century Portrait (2006)

The video work follows the French football world star, Zinedine Zidane, through an entire match and could be seen on the big screen in Louisiana's park over the summer of 2020.

Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, as a portrait, is a masterpiece in recent art history. A total of 17 synchronized cameras follow Zidane around the pitch, both with and without the ball throughout an entire match. The match was played on 23 April 2005 between Zidane's then club, Real Madrid, and opponents from Villarreal.

The video work comes very close to one of the best football players of all time, surrounded by thousands of tightly packed spectators—which, incidentally, could contribute to a strangely melancholic undertone in a time characterized by corona.
