That last one, with all the shades, there is nothing particularly new about that one?

PH: There certainly is, even if you don't notice it at first glance. It incorporates two completely new ideas. Each of the 9 shades comprises three cones, the innermost of which points straight at the focal point of the system in the region of the light bulb. It can be red on one side and blue on the other . . .

Why the Royal Air Force colours?

PH: I have already explained that. The 9 cones take a minimum amount of light, they hide the light bulb socket and allow the maximum amount of ventilation. If you move the light bulb up or down a little, the light will become colder or warmer, whatever best suits the company present.

What's the purpose of all that other stuff?

PH: The other 9 cones are white on the side facing the light. It is these that actually provide the illumination.

The light bulb could hardly be packed away better?

PH: Well, actually, the important edges on the shades are missing where the light from the light bulb gradually disappears. On other lamps which I have designed, it is purely an extension of the shade, but in this case it had a bright surface and is turned so that the light is thrown onto the rear of the shade below . . .

And it's the customary, fashionable shade of lilac!

PH: Well no, it's more a characteristic of the picture to indicate that it's partly in the shade. In actual fact, the 9 cones are white on the outside.

27 cones! Do you really need so many?

PH: It's easier to put light into a woman's hat. Burgundy requires more care.
